Design and ergonomics back to overview
You can not blame HTC for not being clear in naming its smartphones: the Mini One was HTC One smaller, and a giant Max One One. This is the right word, because the segment of “phablettes” HTC is closer to a Galaxy Mega as a Galaxy Note: with its 5.9-inch screen, the Max One imposes
weight of the terminal is equally impressive: 220g! Obviously, the materials used are for something, like the other One, Max gives pride to aluminum
So the design echoes that of the One, or more precisely the Mini One for this. which is the most prominent plastic edging. Two major differences are noted, however: the presence of a biometric sensor in the camera, and the ability to remove the back of the unit to access the SIM card and a Micro SD slot, absent from the other two models . However, the battery is not removable.
Components back to overview
Technically, the HTC Max One does not follow the trend of his name because basically covers the characteristics of the One, without really improving. We thus find the same processor, ie a 600 Snapdragon clocked at 1.7 GHz. The chip integrates a quad-core Adreno 320 graphics part, which remains powerful, but accuses a little kick over the Adreno 330 S800.
Screen 5.9-inch smartphone offers a definition of 1920×1080 pixels, the same as the HTC One. However, the resolution is necessarily less, which is not a problem in practice, the pixel density remains significantly above what is visible to the naked eye.
As the two other smartphones range, the One Max 4G is compatible on all three French bands (800, 1800 and 2600 MHz) and has built-in Wi-Fi full load: standard b, g, n, ac, and Wi -Fi Direct. Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS are a must, unlike the Mini One, Max does not overlook the NFC. Photo Side, HTC stands its ground, and therefore its Ultrapixel sensor , which favors the size of the photosites in relation to their number. One of optical stabilization happening there yet to hatchword on the biometric sensor:: So it remains to 4 megapixels, with a nasty surprise. More classic than the Touch ID iPhone 5s it requires to scan your finger up and down, not just to ask. It’s less convenient, especially since it will perform detection in the dark, with the risk to put fingerprints on the lens of the camera. Another limitation complicates the process: it is not possible to use the sensor when the screen is off. It is therefore the “wake up” beforehand. Good point, however, software side: if you can save only three footprints, one can associate different applications
battery finally set a new record for a smartphone capacity: 3300 mAh
!OS and return to the summary interface
The HTC One Max comes in Android 4.3, but includes mainly the Sense UI version 5.5, with the arrival, finally, of expected improvements. Most concern Blinkfeed home.
For those who wish to continue to use, there are also new. At the output of the HTC One, had criticized the functionality to be limited to a number of predefined news sources. In Sense 5.5, Blinkfeed finally allows you to add RSS feeds. From URL of a stream, an entry “Blinkfeed RSS” appears among the sharing options. Not too soon, even if we would also be able to easily find a stream.
Note also the ability to compose a status directly from Blinkfeed, the appearance of a search engine, the integration of Google+ or an offline mode to save a news stream for later playback. In short, a bunch of late but welcome improvements.
However, if you still enjoy the HTC Sense interface, we would have liked it better fits the screen 6 inches from Max One. And that is not the case, not even for the virtual keyboard does not offer fashion “hand” or dedicated row for numbers as is the case in most large smartphones.
Internet, multimedia and games back to overview
The advantage of a 6 inch, it is obviously the comfort of the web and multimedia experience, and the Max One does not disappoint on that side. Almost tablet as smartphone, the device allows you to surf in landscape mode without even playing touch zoom, full HD video playback taking full advantage of image details, and fully immerse themselves in 3D games.
Max also keeps the other advantage of the range its front stereo speakers. The result is the same: we rarely hear a sound as rich and accurate out of two small speakers smartphone. Obviously, in most cases, you may prefer to use the headphone output and HTC also provides a pair of quality headphones all at acceptable. But the speakers are clearly more than troubleshoot.
To play the smartphone shows all at up to par. However, we would like to see an increase in graphics performance worthy of the craft. For example, with a Snapdragon 800.
Photos and videos back to overview
No surprise on the photos taken with the HTC Max One: we find the 4-megapixel sensor, always based on Ultrapixel technology manufacturer. It is to focus on the size of the photosites rather than multiplication. In itself, it is commendable.
is not surprising to find the same qualities and defects, namely images with accurate color, but lacking in detail, and especially too small. These all-in-fact are usable as is on the web and social networks. But when it comes to crop, you lose the advantage of 8 or 13 megapixel sensor like the ones found on most high-end smartphones.
In low light, the One Max is doing still not bad: it produces quite bright images with good responsiveness, even if they are less detailed
quality 1080p video is also acceptable but note an easy tendency to overexposure.
PerformanceIt is difficult to describe the HTC One Max exceeded: we all remember as the HTC One was at the top there are only a few months. However, since the release of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, the tendency is to Snapdragon 800 on the high end, and inevitably, the results of our performance tests reveal a gap.
still have reservations these scores: except in the case of some games that suffer slightly from lack of GPU Adreno 330, the difference is not really sensitive to daily
Talk videoArmed with a battery of 3300 mAh, the Max One last long. Our self test video, it is almost as good as Galaxy Note 3. The screen is probably a bit more resource intensive, but still close to 10 hours of continuous playback of 720p video with pushed to its maximum brightness LCD, 50% and Wi-Fi enabled.
ConclusionA “phablette” based on the HTC One, on paper, it is rather attractive: we love finishing HTC One Max, the quality of the screen and the elegance of HTC Sense, which has also interface some welcome improvements in its version 5.5.
did, however, want a little more than a big HTC One, and compared to a Samsung Galaxy Note 3, the Max One has little benefit except his superior finish and a few neat details, such as the speakers. The presence of a fingerprint sensor is a plus, but we would have preferred it to be better implemented. This giant One remains ultimately a “XXL” powerful and enduring smartphone, but not the most interesting in its class.
