Having found success with critics this year with the HTC One, Premium sound, HTC has decided to offer input devices and midrange incorporating some elements that made it successful. HTC Desire 601 and is the proud representative.
HTC lent us the camera for a test two weeks. We will try to see if the compromises that have been made to obtain a halved compared to high-end prices are good value or not report. divDesign
When we look at the HTC Desire 601 front, one can not help but see a strong resemblance with the HTC One, especially with steel color pictures circulating on the internet. The last small is slightly more compact than the One, which is logical given that the screen is 0.2 inches smaller.
The materials used are very different however. Instead of aluminum, 601 Desire uses a soft plastic, close enough to touch Lumia 1020 for example. This allows the phone to be lighter than the One with 130g instead of 143g.
The result is very successful and although the screen does not take the entire facade as may be the case on the LG G2 for example, we are left with a device with a very sleek design and nice. The finish is very good and there is no crack, which is very significant on a mid-range device.
only regret in terms of design, the fact that the back cover is difficult to remove. This is also the case with most devices the Lumia range from Nokia, which in order to retain a beautiful design, ensure that no finger grooves are visible. Must therefore force on the bottom of the unit to achieve open and access the SIM card and micro SD card.
Screen
Unfortunately, although the size of the screen is very similar to the HTC One, it is not HD, with a resolution of 540 × 960 pixels, with a density of 245ppi .
The screen is not bad, and certainly not hinder people who have never had a HD screen in the past, but when we got used to it is difficult to go back. When one pays attention, it is easy to see the pixelation. The colors are also quite cold and so may displease those who are accustomed to saturated colors amoled screens.
The viewing angles are very good, however, which will facilitate the ability to watch multiple photos or videos.
Connectivity
level mobile data connectivity, the HTC Desire is 601 can do better than the HTC One with 150mbps LTE and HSPA +. Wi-Fi is its limited 802.11n side and found the Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP. Unfortunately, we must not rely on NFC or infrared, which is a shame.
I have not noticed any problems with reception during the few weeks of using the HTC Desire with the same number of bars on my other devices. The LTE speed is also very similar, with rates often located around 30mbps which is more than enough for all conceivable multimedia.
Performance HTC Desire 601
In daily use, the HTC Desire 601 is really fluid and delays are rare. I was pleasantly surprised because I found the camera almost as fast in the menus the HTC One, yet more powerful. This is particularly significant because usually appliances midrange android are not particularly fluid.
For fans of figures and benchmark, here are the results of the various devices on the two most popular tests, Geekbench 2 and Quadrant:
Autonomy
With a 2100mAh battery, the HTC Desire is 601 in average equipment 4.5 inch screens. And unfortunately this means in practice, with the need to recharge the unit before the end of the day during heavy use. On average use, however, it is hoped through the day without too much trouble, without the need to activate the power saving function.
HTC Desire so did nothing special at this level, but is doing pretty well for a camera of its range.
Android operating system and HTC Sense
HTC has chosen to integrate the same overlay on the HTC One. Having enjoyed it, I think it’s a great idea because the experience is similar whether you are an average or upscale. HTC Sense Android overlay manufacturer, has evolved tremendously over time. Sometimes very heavy and completely changing the operating system from Google, has been reviewed in full version 5 which equips the HTC One.
The first ignition of the device gives way to a wizard created by HTC to best personalize the device. The phone and gives a web address and a code that allows you to set the camera directly from a computer. The user can choose his tones, his wallpaper, set his email accounts, download free applications and even add to favorites internet browser.
By default, the Home screen when you unlock the device is the new “Blinkfeed” HTC functionality. It enables integration of the main sources of information or news of social networks to highlight them on one screen. The feature is very convenient and can even post status on Facebook or other networks directly from this screen. Blinkfeed, if it can not be completely disabled, offers the possibility of being replaced by any other Office Home page, to become almost invisible to those who do not like the idea.
The Application menu was also designed by HTC and the result is that the whole appears more simple and clear: the user has the ability to organize applications as they wish, create folders or even hide applications it deems unnecessary. If this feature is not new, it is always nice because the original applications provided are not useful for everyone.
In the end, we can say qu’HTC was able to develop its Sense interface to satisfy the widest possible audience. Users accustomed to the interface will find an outline of previous versions while allergic to HTC customizations will be delighted that this latest version will do more discreet.
Camera and video camera of HTC Desire 601
At first glance, one might say that the 601 will be better than the Desire HTC One, since it has 5 megapixels, 1 megapixel or more. However, the sensor used is different and no one is taking advantage of the technology ultrapixels or an optical image stabilization.
Pictures of the day are pretty nice and well defined. with colors very close to reality. As might be expected, the result of night quickly becomes noisy and unusable if it does not show great stability when shooting.
Video quality follows the same logic, with a beautiful rendering in ideal light conditions without noticeable judder during fast movements. The night, however, we get instead a very noisy result.
the presence of HTC Zoe Mode, which allows the camera to record short video clips instead of taking pictures, so you can choose the best picture or it will be appreciated apply effects. In addition, the user can create a mini movie than thirty seconds from his photo books, with existing themes. The rendering is very pretty, although it is regrettable that HTC does not offer a export a higher resolution than 720p and with less compression.
Here are some examples of the results we obtained during our test of the HTC One, from the same selection of photos:
Multimedia
The differentiating element in multimedia on the HTC Desire 601, just like the HTC One is clearly the presence of two front speakers to produce stereo sound. The rendering is really good for a cell phone, especially when viewing videos. I however felt that the sound was slightly less powerful than the HTC One, but unfortunately I do not have two devices at the same time to compare.
The use of such speakers for extended listening to music is debatable, but the HTC Desire is really excellent to troubleshoot when you want to listen to something friends. Not only the sound is powerful, but it is also quite accurate even in high volumes. It is to this day, with the HTC One, my best sound experience on a cell phone.
Some devices are capable of playing almost all codecs and formats directly in their original video player. Unfortunately, this is not the case of the HTC Desire 601 which is very limited in terms of supported formats. Point question read files with 5.1 sound or subtitles without using VLC, which is a shame for those who do not like to install applications to replace an original function of the device. In addition, the video portion of test file was read smoothly with the original drive, whether 720p or even 1080p mkv.
Conclusion
The HTC Desire is a very good mid-range device. The user experience is very good and the fact of finding an identical interface to the higher-end models of HTC is very significant.
Unfortunately for HTC, we find for the same price the Nexus 5 in front, considered a high-end, while the Motorola Moto G, yet more powerful, sells for $ 100 less. It is therefore difficult to recommend the HTC people who have one of two choices with their operator, unless you really be a fan of Sense 5.0 and small improvements it brings.
The HTC Desire is currently offered by all operators in Canada to $ 0 with some packages
