After being miniaturized, the HTC One becomes this time a giant and intends to be a place of choice on the market phablettes. Let’s see if its features are sufficient to distinguish a niche increasingly competitive.
After starting the year with a bang, with a very attractive One, HTC ends 2013 XXL fashion. The Taiwanese company has recently launched the declination effect “phablette” one of his best smarpthones and did not do things by half, in terms of measurements at least. With its 5.9” and 217g on the scales, the One Max is indeed a beautiful beast that impresses at first glance, but still seems particularly large and heavy. While the screen of a Galaxy Note III is only 0.2 inches less, the size and weight of the latter are for example more endorsements (168g and 8.3mm thick). A comparison that hurts a little for One Max, but that should not obscure yet its many qualities.

Aesthetically, and outside its measurements, there is indeed nothing wrong: like the mini One, HTC applies exactly the same recipe and offers us a beautiful and well finished phone while aluminum dressed. The rear convex hull (removable for once, which is unfortunately not the case of the battery) is always pleasant to the touch and buttons – this time placed on the side – are easily accessible. At the front, the screen takes a very generous place, while the speakers on both sides deliver a sound that is both powerful and good quality. But the big news this One Max, of course, is the fingerprint sensor on the rear stack below the photo sensor. On paper, the idea is excellent and can simply and effectively secure the device.
completely identical to that of One and One mini, Ultrapixel sensor 4mp offers always result as effective on a smartphone screen, but less convincing in its expansion.
In fact, the execution is mastered, even if the movement imposed to unlock the device – a slide from top to bottom – unnatural. The configuration is very simple, however: you spend four times the affected finger on the sensor, then you choose the corresponding action: unlock the phone and then activate the camera, launch a web page, or any other application of your choice. Up to four different fingerprints can be stored and the response time of recognition is very good, almost the same ilk as an iPhone 5S. During our test, we still got a bug making it impossible to identify the finger, but fortunately disappeared first restart smartphone. In short, even if the technique is not revolutionary, this fingerprint sensor works and brings a touch of innovation to a very traditional phablette finally.
Classic, yes, but effective. By taking all the features of the One, HTC takes little risk, but a book in return immediately attractive product. The Full HD screen of 5.9” is the title of exemplary quality and we find everything that makes the strength of the One, or a little more, since we spend a Gorilla Glass Gorilla Glass 2 Glass 3. Bright and contrast, it displays very deep blacks, bright whites and viewing angles flawless. XXL size also makes it particularly comfortable to watch a movie or play a game, whether you’re indoors or outside under the sun.
Another aspect more satisfying: autonomy. With a generous 3300 mAh battery, the opposite would have been surprising, however, and can be reached here almost the top rankings on our video playback test. Indeed, we have been able to read a file in 720p (max brightness, wifi on) for a little more than 10 hours, a score that only the Galaxy Note III (again) can be slightly exceeded. Under a conventional use, so you can count on almost two days of life, provided you do not abuse too much of the video game, which tend to be very resource intensive. In any case, the HTC Max One can use for well over 24 hours.

It now remains to discuss the performance of the phablette and quality of the user experience offered. On these two points, again, no surprises. 600 Snapdragon found in the HTC One is still in the game, supported by 2GB of RAM. History nitpick – and better justify the price of the product – we would have appreciated the presence of a Snapdragon 800 for the unbeatable time in terms of performance. Fortunately, even if it is not SoC latest generation, it still offers excellent results on all of our benchmarks.

also be noted that this time, HTC had the good idea to add a microSD slot to extend an additional 64 GB 16 GB or 32 original storage. Ideal to install large games and store movies in 1080p, which we consume here with pleasure, as the flow is consistently appointment. Lovers of simplicity and efficiency will also be delighted to find the surchouche Sense here in version 5.5, still beautiful to look at and pleasant to use.
You guessed it, the High One, HTC delivers an phablette very good, with no real default, even if the blow of heart was not relevant. The product remains in effect very upscale in its finish and quality of the screen, but it would still enjoyed reduced dimensions and a lower weight, and the presence of a new generation of SoC, especially given the price of the beast. It remains a beautiful machine, which honors the legacy of the HTC One, there’s already out there almost a year.
